Preventing Heatstroke
Don’t force a dog to exercise on a hot and humid day.Always exercise him in the cooler early morning or evening. If you exercise during the hotter times of the day, your dog will have much more difficulty cooling himself and could overheat quickly.Be careful of hot asphalt. His paws can burn easily since they are not protected by shoes like ours.
When you exercise your dog in the heat, stop and let him drink water frequently.Make sure he is not overweight and is well conditioned for this activity. You might even soak him with water before you exercise so he can stay cooler.
Don’t leave your dog chained up with no access to shade or water. His chain may get caught up and he may not be able to reach either water or shade.
Chained dogs are especially vulnerable to heatstroke.Dogs kept outside must have access to ample amounts of water - best kept in a heavy bowl or bucket so it can t be tipped over.
Never take your dog swimming in the sea unless you can provide a shaded spot and plenty of fresh water to drink.
Always provide plenty of shade for an animal living outside the house.A properly constructed dog house serves best. Provide plenty of cool, clean water and check it several times on a hot day.
Do not keep your dog in confined places, sheds or kennels with limited flow of air.Sheds with a tin or zinc roof are especially dangerous they become like ovens when the sun is on them- raising the temperature inside to dangerous levels.
Never let your animal run loose. This is how they can contract a fatal disease, including rabies, or be injured, killed or stolen.Remember, puppies and kittens are more vulnerable than adults and require constant supervision.
Be sensitive to old and overweight animals in hot weather. Snub nose dogs such as bulldogs, Pekingese, etc. should be kept in cool areas as much as possible.
Never leave a dog in a car, the temperature inside elevates rapidly within minutes.
Don’t carry a dog in the bed of a truck, the metal will burn his feet.
Treatment
Bring him into shade and offer water.Immerse him in cool water or cover with a wet towel or Ice pack on head, back or groin area.Take him promptly to the nearest veterinarian or call for advice. This is an emergency situation and requires immediate care.
Caring for Your Pet in Hot Weather
Your pets have special needs when the temperature and humidity are high. They can suffer from the same problems that humans do-overheating,dehydration and even sunburn. Dogs and cats mostly pant to cool themselvesand seek cool places to avoid the heat. In Belize, heatstroke can develop very quickly. So protect your companion animal from the elements and help them live a long and happy lives.
